Allison Times - 2013 in Review

Mean Green Machine

Hannah Grace passed her driving test in 2013 and headed straight for a lime green VW Bug in Dallas. She didn’t stop smiling for 6 months. Even when parts started rattling off, nothing could shake the Big Green Grin. Since these cars aren’t designed for dirt roads, Hannah drove it so slowly it resembled a large green turtle. Despite her TLC, the green bug threw a headlight while speeding down Hwy 169 in Tulsa. Literally threw an entire headlight, wires and all. Just let ‘er go. Hannah claims she saw it take flight, but there was nothing she could do. Hang on to the wheel and keep driving. The Big Green Grin is beginning to droop

Taiwan Tales
Timothy should write a book on his Taiwan adventures, but until then, one of our favorite stories is the time his rural class of 5th graders went on an over-night field trip to the Big City. Timothy was in charge of 4 boys who were sharing his hotel room. At least, there were 4 when he went to take his shower. When he returned, there were only 3. He figured, “No cause for alarm. The kid’s around here somewhere.”
But, very shortly, the trip supervisor came storming into the room demanding, “Where is Sung-Fu?”
Timothy stared blankly and replied, “Who is Sung Fu?” He only knew the kids by their American names, which he had given them (Ted? Eric? Matt?).
This sparked an explosion of fast, furious verbiage that Timothy could only somewhat interpret. He knew very few Chinese words to fit this occasion, so he used them over and over. “So sorry. So sorry.”
Sung-Fu eventually did return and claimed he had been there all along. No harm done, but Timothy was never again allowed to chaperone a field trip.

Ralph! Ralph!

As the snow melted last January, a huge, shaggy white dog appeared in the front yard. Friendly, slow and docile, Ralph was welcomed and loved by the entire Allison household. Ralph eventually proved to be a female, but it was too late to change his/her name (Hereafter, Ralph will be referred to with alternating gender pronouns). He slept all day, barked all night, and ate lots of food. Kim’s 1st attempt at a flower garden revealed Ralph’s only flaw: she digs huge holes in flower beds. Everything Ralph does is huge. Then came the fateful fall day when the boys started sighting in their rifles. Ralph disappeared. He made a beeline for Nan and Pa’s house and has been there ever since, despite numerous vain attempts on our part to haul her home. He shows up now and then to see what’s in her dinner dish, but the guns keep sending him back up the hill. Maybe this will be her summer home (Right next to the petunias).
Onward and Upward!

Joseph’s wrist was confronted by a grinder while working on a car last January. That ended his career in auto-body, but allowed him to post a nasty bunch of stitches on Facebook to his admiring fans. On to My Place BBQ! It’s a great place for left-overs, but after about 6 months, he had eaten all the BBQ he wanted and started climbing 300’ cell phone towers. At the top of every tower, he makes a vow to quit, but by the time he touches the ground (and gets his paycheck), he has changed his mind.

Caleb’s Field Trips

Caleb took Jubilee to visit his favorite childhood destination: the Kirkpatrick Center in OKC (aka the Omniplex, aka the Science Museum, etc.). They both had a great time, and of course, no excursion is complete without lots of good food, at as many restaurants as you can stuff in. In that regard, they are the perfect pair. They also took a jaunt to the Tulsa Zoo last year, where Caleb got suckered into buying a picture of Jubilee on a camel, a stuffed animal from the gift shop, and many a ride on the carousel. Good times with Bubba!

She’s in the Jailhouse, Now

Last May, Bethany graduated from NSU with her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Science, and is now living in Tulsa and working at the County jail (She somehow managed to remove herself from Uncle Sam’s military roster just after the last newsletter was published. We didn’t ask how, but we are eternally grateful.). Babysitting inmates has provided Bethany much character development and a few bruises. It’s a ministry.

Pint-Sized Missionary

At the last minute, Jubilee decided to go on the church mission trip (her first) to Texas with her dad. Without her mom. For a whole week.

Jubilee enjoyed helping renovate an old church camp ground and also helped with meal preparations. She did need to move her cot right next to her Dad’s, but who cares? Kim spent the week painting the house in lonely solitude. Whose idea was this, anyway?

Another Dropped Call in Brazil

As soon as Timothy came home from Taiwan, he was making plans to go to Brazil. He worked (like a horse!) 2 months with a missionary couple who ran a drug rehab “ranch” and was even able to do a little preaching through an interpreter. He also helped another missionary family get their operation off the ground and into the water – a floating ministry - to bring fresh-water wells to the villages along the Amazon River. This Amazon boat-tour fulfilled a lifelong dream of Timothy’s, and the Amazon still has his heart. It still has his cell phone, too. It slipped into the murky waters while he was sleeping on deck. Only the piranhas kept him from diving in after it.

The Ballad of the Honda Rebel

Years ago, when Timothy got his motorcycle license, Herb went in halves with him to buy a Honda Rebel. Later, Timothy sold it to Joseph, and just to be fair, Herb went in halves with him to buy it. Then Joseph sold it to Hannah, and she sold it to Herb for more than she paid for it (having never driven it past the mailbox). Now, since Herb is the sole, uncontested owner of the Rebel, Joseph has borrowed it. He is trying to sell Herb the truck that Herb gave him last year. And Herb’s major was Business Finance! Could someone loan Herb a calculator?
Please note that Bethany opted out of the line-up of Rebel ownership. When her turn came, she took one practice ride on the dirt bike and drove it straight up the kids’ clubhouse, snapping every rung on the rope ladder as she went. Kept the throttle wide open all the way. “Never let go” has been her motto since childhood; tenacity, her greatest strength. The ride down was more abrupt. After she revived, we easily convinced her to stick with 4-wheeled vehicles.

A-Camping We Will Go

Last summer, Uncle Curt organized a camp-out at Robbers’ Cave State Park for any willing nieces and nephews. Jubilee and Mom represented the Allison family, while Kristen’s clan boasted a full tent with all 7 members present. Caleb acted as spelunking guide, but hit the trail home before the raccoon made its midnight appearance and looted our snacks. It saved us some calories but kept us up most of the night rattling chip bags.
The trip included swimming, hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding. Kim stared down her life-long fear of horses and agreed to ride, but only if her horse was nicknamed “Granny” and had never had more than one hoof off the ground at a time. When the trail wound slowly through a nest of hornets (or something similar), even seasoned riders were bailing off, and “Granny” high-tailed it home, along with 3 other renegade horses. Kim was grateful to walk back in peace, her fear of horses still intact. With two good legs and a set of car keys, no one really needs to ride horses, anyway. No need to prove anything. All of the cousins and Jubilee continued the trail ride without a hitch J and are ready for the next  Uncle Curt Adventure.

Goodness Snakes!

We discovered that Timothy isn’t afraid to tackle any project - plumbing, electrical, carpentry - unless it involves snakes. While crawling under the house to re-route a gas line, Timothy encountered a snake. He shot out backward and kept running - pale, breathless and stuttering; grass and dirt flying off his hair and clothes.  He suggested we hire that little job out to a plumber friend, and just not tell him about the snake. That’s how we treat our friends.

If the Barn Needs Painted…

It started small. We just needed to replace the kitchen carpet. It was 20 years old, after all. But first, let’s move the island and upper cabinets over to the wall. And take out the upper cabinets above the bar. And add a concrete pass-through bar into the living room. Add a built-in spice rack, remove the pantry, strip and paint the dining room table (Curt’s idea), add a ceiling fan, move out the file cabinets, paint the ceiling and walls, and lay down a wide plank knotty pine floor (Timothy’s idea). But wait! That makes the floor too tall for the doors to open and close, so all the doors had to be raised ¾”. This revealed a problem with water drainage on the back deck, which required taking half the deck apart. It still isn’t finished (all the interior remodeling is being done simultaneously with the painting and renovating of the outside of the house. It still isn’t finished, either. Anyone who likes to paint is welcome to join us.). And the living room carpet (20 years old, after all) looked really bad up next to the dining room wood floor, so the carpet got ripped up all the way down the hall. More wood ordered, laid, and sealed.
But wait! Kim didn’t want to smell the deadly fumes from polyurethane sealer, so she insisted on using all natural Tung oil and citrus solvent on the floor (Timothy argued that stingrays and rattlesnakes are also all natural.). This stuff has to have 5 – 7 coats over a 2 day period, and then it takes 30 days to cure. No shoes for a month. No furniture. The family stands barefoot in the living room and stares silently at the floor. It’s all Kim’s fault. And it has to be re-sealed every year. For the rest of your life.
Then Timothy started in on the bathroom. He wants to add a concrete counter-top, and a tiled shower. And the floor looks bad in there, too. But it’s 20 years old, after all. Timothy’s M.O. is to tear up an area and then leave the country. We have no choice but to try to repair it. “Get busy”, he says. “Have it done when I get back.” Kids these days.
At periodic intervals during the remodeling, Timothy would invite a group of friends from out-of-state or overseas, to come and stay the week. The purpose was to push us to a frenzy of painting and hammering. It became common-place to have people sleeping on sofas and floors, and walking on drop-cloths through the construction zones.
We are now in the midst of a 6-month standoff on countertop material. Kim doesn’t mind Formica. Herb, however, has a burning desire to replicate Fort Knox. The idea that granite would never need to be replaced or remodeled in any way speaks to his soul on a very deep level. Timothy wants to do all the counters in concrete (We’re leaning toward a farmhouse-lodge-traditional-shabby-eclectic style.). Kim fears the added weight of all that concrete may sink the kitchen. It’s 20 years old, after all.

To Cap It Off…

Herb’s new hobby uses up the rest of his 24 allotted hours per day. His manual ammo reloader makes 1 bullet at a time, and, oddly, has the arm mechanism of a slot machine, with the same addictive powers. Whenever Herb can’t be found, just look for him in the shop, preparing for Armageddon.
Timothy is coaching Hannah Grace through her ACT readiness class, and keeps her saddled with assignments. He must be a good motivator, because her practice test scores are steadily improving.
Caleb enjoys teaching his favorite subject (history) to Kristen’s kids 2 days/week. He usually hangs around long enough to eat lunch with them, but “The History Guy” claims food was not a factor in his decision.
Bethany and Hannah Grace traveled to Moore, OK to help with the tornado clean-up. They were able to clear 2 house sites before noon, and won the unofficial title of “fastest working crew.”
Hannah Grace and Jubilee kept the piano keys hot with lessons and a recital in 2013. They also sang a few specials in church, which made their mother very proud, indeed!
The Allison and Price families enjoyed caroling room to room at the VA hospital and serenading the folks at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home (including a personal concert in Aunt Jenny’s room!) What we lacked in harmony, we made up for in volume, thanks to Herb and Uncle Curt!
Chinese New Year in Taiwan means a month-long break from school, so Timothy went country hopping. He snow skied in South Korea, toured the Philippines, and visited friends in Singapore. Must be rough.

For the 2nd year in a row, Jubilee has been the only kid in tow at the annual home-school conference in Big Sandy, TX. Maybe this is the new normal, but Kim doesn’t like it.

Code Breaker
Timothy sent this update after a few months in Taiwan: “For all those who have wondered about how the Chinese language came about, wait no longer! I have the answer!
A long time ago, everyone spoke an easy language; it was so easy they called it English for short. Then one day, some guys in black hats got together and decided to create a SECRET CODE. They wanted to make it the most difficult code to crack ever in history! They started off by making all the words sound like GIBBERISH, but that wasn't enough. They decided to make slightly different tones for the gibberish, so that foreigners who tried to crack the code would say HORSE instead of MOTHER, or DIE instead of 4! They all had a little chuckle just at the thought of an outsider trying to learn their language.
   Still not enough they said! So, an entirely new alphabet was developed! It used things never before seen like;
,,, and . They used an entirely different counting system! They even made up different hand gestures!! It seemed impossible to crack this master secret code!!
One man in the back said, "But friends, we are old now (because we've worked on this code all our lives) and we must teach this system to our children.  If outsider people set out to learn our code we made for our children, and try really, really, really hard, they might someday succeed."
The men thought and thought.  Finally, the leader of the group said. "I've got it! We will
base our entire written language on 214 random little patterns called radicals. From these little guys, we will derive innumerable bigger random patterns called characters. Then the outside people will think that the big patterns sound like the little patterns from which they are derived.... BUT NO! They will sound nothing alike and no foreigner will ever know our secret language!!! We can call it "Chinese Not Yours." Later the name was shortened to simply "Chinese."
Well folks, the Masters of Secret Code were proven wrong today... I bought a coffee, and the lady said “三十,三...零!,” which I have finally deciphered, and I think it means 30!!! What now, Secret Code Guys!

Why Tai?

For those who don’t know the scoop: Timothy took a 1 month mission trip to Taiwan 2 years ago, and vowed to return. Last summer, he jumped at the chance to spend a year teaching English in the Taiwanese public schools (English being his weakest subject). He attended a 3 week “Teaching English as a Second Language” course in Indianapolis, packed his bags, and took off.
He stays at a school in 南投 County (center of the island) that has had some of the classrooms converted into a dorm like setting for Timothy plus 7 other English Teachers. He serves in 4 schools, a different one each day, with Wednesdays off to study. His first day in school caused riots as children gathered around “The Tall American,” shouting to see his muscles (If your self-esteem needs a boost, just move to Asia.)! The kids love “Teacher Tim,” and since there are few Americans in the Taiwanese mountains, he enjoys celebrity status almost everywhere he goes. We have already scheduled his deprogramming therapy with Uncle Roy when he comes back home.

Read any good books, lately?

Speaking of Uncle Roy, his book is almost in print! Years ago, Uncle recorded his childhood stories, and Kim has spent every spare minute of 2012 typing them into  book format.  The book awaits Uncle’s stamp of approval, while Kim wraps up the endless details. You can preview a few chapters at: www.sharecropperslife.blogspot.com

Bench press Buddies
Joseph kept up with football practice all summer, eyeing the possibility of playing in the fall, but after a few pre-season hits to the knee, he changed his path to glory. He is now on a power lifting team, pursuing the title of Mr. Universe. If you were wondering how GNC is still in business in these hard economic times, wonder no more. It’s the new Jack LeLanne stocking the cabinets with muscle-man powder.
In his “indestructible” mode, Joseph challenged Uncle Curt to a weight lifting contest. We all warned them not to do it. Uncle Curt literally ripped a muscle trying to keep up with Jack, er, Joseph. So while Uncle Curt recuperated from pectoral surgery, Joseph had to drive him around to all his service calls and do all his heavy work for him, not to mention tying his shoes. We did warn them.

Hunting Report

With Timothy gone, and Joseph running off to hunt with his friends, Herb found a new hunting buddy: Hannah Grace. They were quite a team fighting over tree stands and snacks, but Hannah did nail her first buck in 2012. It was a spike, but let’s not quibble over points. Joseph had to come back home to shoot a very spry 7-point, which gave him a good run for his money. Herb missed several bucks before we realized the problem was his vision. He is getting older, and he looks so cute wearing reading glasses! He finally settled for 2 doe, but finished the season most unhappy. L

Private Bethany
It is hard to write an article about Bethany, because she refuses to tell us what she has been doing.  She is forever borrowing Herb’s GPS unit in order to arrive at undisclosed locations. She took a jaunt to Dallas with some friends in July and we haven’t even been allowed to see a picture. The only reason we knew about the trip at all was because she needed a ride to and from the airport.
Her publicized whereabouts include a little rock rent house in Tahlequah from which she will finish up her Criminal Justice degree next May.  From there, she becomes the property of the United States Military for 4 years. We have yet to determine whose day it was to watch her when she signed her name on the dotted line. An investigation is pending.

Jack of all Trades

Timothy breezed through an EMR (Responder) class this past year and decided it was the perfect career for Caleb. Since Caleb wasn’t using his Paralegal Certificate, he took his brother’s advice and enrolled in a 1-year EMT (Technician) course. Class meets at night, so he can still do Uncle Curt’s books at Rapid Repair. If all goes well, he will be a paralegal, paramedic, and, according to Uncle Curt, a para-accountant.

Still a secret

Ever ready for a party, Hannah Grace went all out for Herb and Kim’s 25th wedding anniversary in October. Hannah enlisted help from all the relatives, especially Nan, and dragged out every photo album in the house (they still aren’t back in order!). It was obvious that a lot has happened in 25 years! After all was said and done, Herb and Kim both agreed: The secret to a happy marriage is…still a secret.

It’s a Jungle Out There!

Hannah Grace spent 3 weeks in the jungles of Chiapas, Mexico last summer. Her mission: install cooking stoves and water filtration systems. The team also taught Bible stories and songs to the children who gathered to watch their every move. The crowd chanted “Hanna Bataya!” (wash the clothes) whenever they caught sight of our heroine. In addition, she helped in the medical clinic and entertained the children at a small orphanage.
To show their gratefulness, one village killed a pig for the team. The big pot of “pig soup” (which must be eaten) was blamed for the intestinal illness that disabled the entire group for several days.
When Hannah finally saw some food she was familiar with – green beans – she loaded her plate and her fork. One swallow and she knew she had been duped. Her mouth and esophagus exploded with fire. The “green beans” were really deceptive peppers. Hannah Grace screamed, danced, and gasped for air while the waiter offered “Agua! Agua! Agua!”
Mishaps aside, she was ready to go back to the jungle as soon as she touched home base. Hannah is looking forward to the possibility of a language intensive trip sometime in the spring of 2013.

Tour of Duty

Among his many enterprises, Timothy started a tourism business last summer with overseas clientele. Felicia, Bernita, and little sister Bernadine flew in to Oklahoma from Singapore for a 2-week guided tour of the US, courtesy of Timothy and his handy assistant, Hannah.
The fun started at the airport, when they all tried to pile in the driver’s side of Uncle Curt’s truck (which served as the tour bus). Singaporeans not only drive on the wrong side of the road, they drive from the wrong side of the vehicle, as well.
The coffee and Redbull flowed like water as the group took on the Rocky Mountains (very cold compared to the equator), Cedar Point Amusement park in Ohio, the Great Lakes, Niagra Falls, New York City, Broadway plays, the White House, Maryland crabs, Amish towns, Krispy Kreme, 50’s diners, apple pies, the whole American experience!
Of course the most fun was had right here at the old Ponderosa. They went fishing, bottle fed a calf, climbed a tree, and chewed some gum, all of which are illegal back home (everything is illegal in Singapore). They also spent one whole day riding horses at the Turner Ranch in Eufaula.
Oh and guns! Of course they had to shoot guns while they were here! But shooting wasn’t enough for Bernita. She wanted to kill something! That chicken never even saw it coming! Every day was a new experience.
Plans are already being made for another sweep of the continent, but next time, Timothy will need to rent a Greyhound bus for all of Felicia and Bernita’s friends who are begging for the same vacation package. And don’t forget to save a seat for Mom!

                                                                 Motorcycle Madness

Remember Joseph’s new, fast, shiny motorcycle that we reported on last year? Looks as if it was a little too fast. When Joseph said his friend could take it for a spin, he didn’t mean that literally. Somehow it slid into a pole, and the super-fast Triumph Daytona became a super-slow bucket of bolts. Thankfully, the driver suffered only a broken arm, and Joseph suffered only a very upset stomach. It still makes him queasy every time he sees it in the front yard.

Vintage Pigskin

Herb was invited to attend the reunion of the ‘62 and ‘82 National Championship football teams at UCO. We were treated to a fine dinner, and VIP status in the air-conditioned crow’s nest (the only way to watch a ballgame, in Kim’s opinion). The ’62 and ’82 Broncho champs were introduced on the field at half-time to wild applause.
Herb’s guided tour of the campus lasted all day, culminating in a slow walk down memory lane to the stadium a few hours before kick-off. A few hours? Oh, yes. They hadn’t even unlocked the crow’s nest when Herb got comfortable in the scorching sun to watch…some pre-game scoreboard tests and chain measuring. Well, the cheerleaders had to inspect their pom-pons and the mascot had to get dressed, things like that. There were actually 1 or 2 other fans in the stands at that time, waiting for the old gridiron to come alive.
Kim, meanwhile, had fled to the nearest shade tree, watching for Herb’s signal to start ringing her cowbell. Yea, team!

Goin’ Under

Jubilee pestered us for weeks to arrange for her baptism. She made the decision herself, after reading a “comic book” style Bible called Good and Evil from No Greater Joy. When the big day finally arrived, she was so nervous, we thought she would chicken out. But she was determined to follow through, and did just fine when Bro. Danny dunked her. J Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me...for of such is the Kingdom of God,” Mark 10:14.

Busy as a timothy

As we often say, Timothy should start his own newsletter. It appears as if he is the only one who does anything, and the rest of us just sit around and watch (makes us look bad).
This past year was no exception. In addition to graduating from Thomas Edison State College with his bachelor’s in Business Marketing, working for Rapid Repair, and doing all the other things a Timothy does (deep breath-), he went snow- boarding, learned kite boarding (head first, with an oversized kite that no human could control. That's why it was on sale.), took Scuba classes, took art classes (which accidently turned out to be “modern art” instead of a horse), kayaked down the Illinois river with brother Joe and friend Peter (barely surviving a storm), began tennis training with a jim-dandy pro racket (watch for him on ESPN), and lastly, took up the mandolin (most Taiwanese have never seen one, so he sets the bar). Bear in mind these are merely the things we know of before he moved to Taiwan in the summer…
One thing the Allison's have learned is that the worst disasters make the best stories. If we did everything perfect, no one would want to read about it… right Timothy?  "All things work together for good to them that love the Lord,"
Romans 8:28.

Jumping to contusions

Timothy spent a week in California jumping off bridges – not the Golden Gate. His antics paved the way for his first ever visit to the chiropractor.
Bethany did some jumping, herself, from an airplane! Her painful landing was also fodder for the doctor (her tailbone no longer comes to a point).
How could we have known that buying them a trampoline early on would cause them to develop a jumping obsession?

End Notes

Uncle Curt took Caleb and Joseph to visit the Alamo last summer. We think his true motivation is to get his name in the newsletter. There you go, Uncle Curt!
Herb was the only representative of the Allison family on the church mission trip this past year. The other Allison’s were coming and going elsewhere. We hope this trend is only temporary, and the family will re-convene on the other side of chaos. Hope. Hope.
Joseph’s FFA skeet shooting team qualified for state competition, but no title. L Joseph will just have to keep practicing with Herb’s ammo. It’s free.
Hannah Grace and Jubilee were the only 2 of our peeps to be involved in piano recitals this year. Numbers are dwindling and it is a scary thought…
Kim ran a taxi service to the airport in 2012, escorting Nan and Aunt Judy to their plane bound for Costa Rico and keeping Timothy and Hannah Grace coming and going from all parts of the world. Barring road construction, Kim could make it to the airport blindfolded.
We all know Joseph is accident prone, but try to picture this. He says he accidently dyed his hair blonde. Friends, I am only repeating what he said.
Herb discovered that when you raise wild turkeys, even if you take them far, far away and let them loose, they always come back home to roost. It’s hard to hunt something that won’t leave your front porch rail.
Hannah Grace participated in STEP (Skills Training in Emergency Preparedness), a 4 week survival course in Texas last summer.  Upon graduation, she became our step-daughter. J
After 3 years of employment, Bethany had to retire from the Muskogee Public Library in order to spend more time doing ROTC activities. Not only do we miss seeing her smiling face every week on town day, L we actually have to pay our overdue fines!
Joseph finally got his driver’s license in 2012, and Hannah started her Driver’s Ed, thus allowing mom to log in many more hours in the Highway Patrol’s Office. Better bring along a good book, is all I have to say. After enduring 5 driver’s ed classes, Kim has finally come to the realization that she is indestructible until her purpose is finished.
Joseph’s current max is 290 on bench press. Timothy’s max is undisclosed, but according to Joseph, it is considerably less than his. J
If you want to send Timothy a note or a BBQ sandwich, his address is:
Yingpan Elementary School
No 136 Yingpan Road
Nantou City, Nantou County 540-47 Taiwan
Late Breaking News: Trouble seems to follow some people around, but in Joseph’s case, it gets in front of him. Both the cow and the truck had to be towed away from “ground zero” on Highway 64. Once again, Joseph was unharmed, other than a familiar queasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. He should never leave home without a roll of Tums.

Honesty

The following true story was related to me by my great-uncle, Roy Rains. I have been trying to put his memoirs into a book, but for now, they will be blog posts! I have started a blog just for his stories, and it needs some followers! www.sharecropperslife.blogspot.com
"In 1939, when I was 9 years old, we moved to the "Pugh Place," less than a mile north from where I live today. We called it the Pugh Place because a man named Mr. Pugh owned it. He lived in Muskogee and worked at the Federal Court House.
My dad didn't own any land of his own at the time, but he loved to farm, and the Pugh Place had 130 acres. This was 50 acres more than what we farmed before, back at the Rains' place where I was born. I guess Dad figured that his kids were getting bigger, and could handle 50 more acres.
Mr. Pugh came down twice per year - when the strawberries were ripe, because we had a beautiful strawberry patch, and when we started picking cotton, because ¼ of the cotton would be his, and 1/3 of the grain would be his. As a sharecropper, my dad would sell the cotton, and give the landlord ¼ of what the cotton brought. When we gathered the grain, we would take 10 rows and leave 5 for the landlord, all the way across the field. This was how we paid the rent for the house and land.
My dad would always call his landlord, and tell him to come and look at the field to make sure Dad had left him his third. I remember once when the landlord came down, I walked out to the field with him and Dad to count the rows. After Mr. Pugh finished counting, he said, “That’s exactly the way it's supposed to be.”
And if you knew my dad, you would know that’s the only way it was going to be. I don’t remember the landlord ever coming back to count the corn again. He knew my dad was an honest man and would give him what he had coming."

Life Lesson: Treat others the way you would want to be treated.
Honesty - Earning future trust by accurately reporting past facts.

The Allison Times, January 2012

Editors: Herb and Kim Allison,

Subject Matter: Caleb 23, Bethany 21, Timothy 19, Joseph 16, Hannah Grace 15, Jubilee 6 (ages as of Jan. 2012)

Knee-Jerk Reaction

We scheduled Joseph’s knee surgery for late January 2011, not realizing, of course, that the following week would bring that record-breaking snowfall. Poor Joseph, propped up on the couch, doped up on pain pills, unable to go sledding with his friends. But wait! Was that Joseph being pulled behind the truck on homemade skis? Down the middle of the road? Too many pain pills make Joseph a crazy boy. While Mom hummed about in the kitchen making hot chocolate, Joseph made his escape to join in the fun. And he wonders why his knee still hurts one year later.

Snow Business

That same hill which provided all the sledding fun, also created an impossible uphill drive out from the Allison house. Bethany, however, thought she could make it. A few hours later, our neighbor stopped to inform us that Bethany's empty car was parked horizontally about half way up the hill (she had abandoned the car, walked to Nan’s house, and gone to bed). He shared that he and a friend had tried to pull it out and could not, due to the bumper structure. Someone, he asserted, would have to tie it to a tractor and yank it free, or else it would cause all kinds of mayhem to anyone else who tried to go up or down - blocking the way, as it was. Many a neighbor walked around it, sadly shaking their heads at the tires and bumpers, wondering how to move it. After a few days, the snow melted enough to allow the car to slide into a direction more parallel to the road. From there, the pit crew was able to back it down the hill and get a running start back up, and out to freedom. We haven’t seen Bethany since.

World Traveler

Timothy made another month-long trip to the other side of the planet in May, 2011. He taught children’s seminars in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia (with a little sight-seeing thrown in). He missed us terribly. This time we made sure that he “toxed out” before he came home. He stopped off in Wyoming for a week to do some rock climbing with friend Josh, who had just graduated from school.

Oh, Deer!

Hannah shot her first deer this year (with a muzzle-loader)! Why is it the newbies always shoot at dusk and need a search party of 4 to find the deer? Weight and rack mattered not to Hannah. What mattered was the picture with the deer on Facebook. Technically, her first deer was shot the week before (she claimed), but no trace could be found of the big one that got away. This “phantom-deer” had to be sought during an electrical storm, with the search party finally running for cover – fearing life and limb.

Tourist Attraction

Upon graduation from his paralegal course, History Buff Caleb was treated to a Reformation Tour: Germany, Switzerland, England, and the Netherlands. He was able to see all the places he had always dreamed of seeing – Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle – not to mention eat all the food he had always dreamed of eating! As with most of our family travelers, he plans to return as soon as time and money afford. In the words of an old sage: “How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm, after they’ve seen Paree?”

25 Years and Holding

State Farm is so proud that Herb has been with the company for 25 years (Feb ‘12). Herb says he can’t retire till the kids leave home. The kids say they won’t leave home till he retires. $$

Better Late than Never

Bethany was only slightly late to receive her certificate at the Presidential Honor Roll recognition ceremony. She was on time, however, for her graduation from Connors State College last May and was the only one to stand when they announced “4.0 GPA” (wild applause!). Bethany says there were other 4 points besides herself - but maybe they were just late.

Way Cool Mission Trip

Herb, Timothy, Joseph, and Hannah went with the church to help clean up the tornado aftermath in Joplin. They were sobered to see the devastation and honored to clear out 5 home-sites while they were there. If the homeowners did not clear their lot in 30 days, they would be fined $3000 for the city to bulldoze the debris. After 4 days of hard work, they visited Silver Dollar City for a day of fun.

Traffic Report

Bethany and Timothy both survived some pretty nasty collisions last year. Bethany totaled her car when she pulled out in front of someone behind the library where she works. They must have been flying, because her car was towed to the scrap heap. Thankfully, Bethany walked away without a scratch – well, no big ones anyway.

Timothy ruined his motorcycle when a deer pulled out in front of him on his way home from Gore. The deer must have been flying, because it sent Timothy and his motorcycle into a heap in the ditch. The bike is still out of commission (thankfully), and Timothy walked away without a scratch – well, no big ones anyway.

No More Football

Joseph bid adieu to his football team when he hurt his “good” knee during a game last fall. He decided that if his only hope to play football involved another surgery, he was out. His latest hobby is washing his newly acquired Triumph Daytona 955i motorcycle (“fast”). Any dirt on the bike would slow it down considerably.

Half a Century!

The whole family (plus a few more) pitched in to give Nan & Pa (Price) a 50th Anniversary Party last October. The big hit was the picture DVD made by cousin Suzy – not a dry eye in the house! If anyone was unable to attend and would like to see the DVD, let us know and we can get you a copy. Have Kleenex handy!

Hunting Report

Herb spent 2 weeks of vacation at James Collins wildlife reserve near Quinton, OK, where Timothy was also drawn for a special hunt. Herb’s abode was a box trailer and his food came from cans, with no facilities for miles. His suffering paid off (doesn’t it always?) when he bagged a 9 point and a doe – his first with a bow. He hauled them home, along with Timothy’s doe that he killed as he ran through camp on his way back from a volleyball tournament in OK City. Timothy also shot a 7 point before he was ready to come home. Joseph added to the bounty with a doe and a spike (be it known that Joseph thought the spike was a doe).

No Hunter Left Behind

On one very fateful day of hunting season, Joseph begged to cancel his after school physical therapy appointment so he could hunt. Herb gave Joseph no choice – “It’s your duty, son. You made the appointment. To therapy you must go.” Joseph was dismissed with a snappy salute and sent down the driveway. But as soon as Joseph cleared the mailbox, Herb scrambled up in Joseph’s deer stand and shot an 8 point. This still makes Joseph mad. He claims he would have shot it if only he had been here! When Timothy came home, he said he would have shot it if he had been here! Hannah Grace contended she would have shot it, if she hadn’t had to babysit! The truth is, when all 4 of them clamored up in the stand together, it would have crashed to the ground, sending all the local deer running to the Arkansas River.

Join the Club…

Hannah boarded a van full of girls for a 2 week trip to Michigan in November. Her “Journey to the Heart” summit was dusted with 7 inches of snow (snowball fight!), and the lake was frigid, but she just had to jump in. A last minute volleyball game sent her to the floor with …guess what…a dislocated knee! She is now wearing Joseph’s old knee brace (we have them in every size). Kids will do anything to get their name in the paper.
Treasures in Heaven

Herb and Timothy (with his flexible job at Rapid Repair) took off for a week and headed to North Dakota to do some flood relief “mudding out” with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team. It was a smelly job, but somebody had to do it. Just another reminder that all of one’s earthly possessions can be wiped away in a moment of time. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven…For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21.

To Cap it off…

Timothy decided life wasn’t dangerous enough, so he took a flying leap from an airplane – just for fun. Skydiving has been checked off his list, and kite-surfing is next.

Hannah returned to CYIA last summer to teach children’s Bible clubs in the Tulsa area. Jubilee is always sad to see her siblings leave for any length of time, especially Hannah Grace. Jubilee says she likes to have everyone in the nest (just like mama).

Timothy had his wisdom teeth removed last year – we hope this doesn’t bring him up short on any wisdom later in life.

2011 brought 2 new cousins to the Allison children! Kim’s sister, Kristen, had her 5th child, a boy, in January, and Herb’s sister, Lea, had her 1st child, a girl, in November. Names: Charles Matthew and Hedy Lamarr, respectively.

Kim, Timothy, Hannah, and Jubilee traveled to Big Sandy, TX for our annual homeschool conference. Jubilee invited herself to many a campfire and made lots of new friends.

Kim attended her 30-year class reunion in 2011. She couldn’t imagine how everyone had changed except her!

How could we forget to mention the ducks, geese, and turkeys killed by the great Allison hunters? Numbers elude us, but once again, the freezer is full. Out of necessity, Joseph has become a mighty fine duck chef. You’re all invited!

Timothy and Hannah continued to teach a few Kids for Christ lessons at Creek Elementary School. It is amazing that they are able to work together without killing one another, while they teach about love.
Herb brought home a dozen new baby chicks, and as many baby wild turkeys, which Jubilee was thrilled to play with, until they began to jump from her hands! Yike! Of course, the chickens are for eggs, and the turkeys… you’ll have to ask Herb.

Hannah attended an Ultimate Quest conference in OK City last summer (very awesome!), while Mom and Jubilee took in the OK City zoo. The “zoo pair” nearly melted in the 100+ heat, when they got stranded at the back part of the zoo with the gazelles. African plains. Miles of wasteland. Not a shade tree in sight. But thanks to the tram, they were able to make it out alive. Jubilee will not want to go again for a long time.

Once again, the family made Mom proud when they all showed up for caroling at the Stigler Wal-Mart. Stigler? It seems the phone book didn’t specify a town with the Wal-Mart listing, and Mom thought she was making arrangements with the Checotah Wal-Mart. Good thing they called to confirm. Oh well, it wasn’t that much farther.
*Herb says Kim should be thankful that he doesn’t write a newsletter! Oh, the tales he would tell!
Timothy finally got his antelope mount which now adorns our living room. It has been decorated with necklaces, sunglasses, and finally Christmas decorations.

Tribute to a Veteran

                 (Uncle Roy)

Did God know, in that war long ago,
That we would need you so much?
Did his mighty hand lead you to land,
And protect you from the enemy’s touch?

Were you sheltered for a purpose
While other ships were torn?
Did His plans include a heritage
To children yet unborn?

Were little boys with B-B guns
And girls with pony tails
Included in your destiny
When all the ships set sail?

Yes, an unseen hand was guiding.
He knew what lay in store.
He knew that we would need you,
So, He carried you to shore.

                              - Kim Allison

*I wrote this poem a few years ago when I suddenly realized it was Veteran's Day and I didn't have a card for Uncle Roy! The inspiration came from an old drawing of a ship at sea with a giant hand under the water protecting it. And of course, the real-life inspiration came from Uncle Roy's influence on my kids. Like the time when Uncle Roy killed a snake, left it in the road, came and picked up the kids with BB guns, and went back "snake hunting." Lo and behold, there was a snake to be killed! Or the many times he gathered them up to clean out the barn, paint a fence, or bottle feed a baby calf. And who could forget the daily rounds of the "government land" to count the cows? Every time they pulled out of the driveway, he would have them call back to me, "Don't cry, mama!" :) The work ethic and character qualities he instilled in them have, thank God, lingered on. God knew I would need some help raising my crew, so He planted us right down the road from one of the "Greatest Generation." What a blessing!

AllisonTimes 2011!

New Beginnings

Caleb graduated from Connors State College last May and enrolled in a Paralegal Course in September through Oak Brook College of Law. He is really enjoying the subjects, and the late-night study sessions (as he continues to work for Uncle Curt during the day) are right up his alley. Kim listens to his law lectures while cleaning up the kitchen every evening, as well as critiques his essays, so they should graduate at about the same time.

Timothy started an Accelerated Distance degree program last October which allows him to test out of college subjects (with CLEP and DANTES tests) as quickly as he can digest the information. He will then turn in all his test scores to Thomas Edison State College for a BS in Business/Computers. True to form, Timothy has a personal goal of completing his 4 year degree in 1 year. At the time of this writing, he has tested out of 66 hours in 3 months. Will he make it? Stay tuned.

Joseph enrolled as a freshman in Warner High School last fall to play football. It was quite a reality check for homework-hating Joseph. And after an X-ray of his ribs and knee, and an MRI and knee braces, he wasn’t in any shape to play football. However, he is determined to stay in the game and plans to finish out the school year, at least.

Hannah Grace enrolled as a 1st year student in Child Evangelism Fellowship last summer. She stayed most of the summer with the Kohen family, teaching 5-Day Clubs for children in the Tulsa area. She is still doing her school studies on the fast track at home.

Bethany still works at the Muskogee Public Library part time, while attending CSC full time. She is planning on transferring to NSU upon graduation from CSC.

Jubilee began K-4 school at home, and wakes up with a new beginning every day!
Among My Souveniers

Timothy took a little 4 week jaunt to Taiwan and Hong Kong last January to teach children’s Bible seminars (plus do a little sight-seeing!). The TSA and the Taiwanese food were the most difficult parts to adjust to. The Taiwanese will fry anything, including chicken feet, and people eat it! However, the night market made up for all the discomforts. Timothy brought home lots of souvenirs, such as chop sticks and … chicken pox. Timothy’s case of pox was relatively mild, compared to all the other big kids, who succumbed 2 weeks later. Joseph’s case was the worst, lasting an entire month. Like Job, he took a pot shard and “scraped himself withal.” He came dangerously close to the “bright light.” The only solace for the sick ones was in the shower. We went through 2 tanks full of propane that month – ours and Uncle Curt’s. Many sins were confessed and long-standing family mysteries were cleared up in their quest for healing. I guess there’s a bright side to everything.

No Reservations

Herb, Timothy, Joseph and Hannah boarded the bus for the annual church mission trip again. Destination 2010: the Indian Reservation of South Dakota. “Culture shock” is not quite adequate to describe their reaction. In Herb’s words, “I could stay here the rest of my life and not make a dent.” But, like that one starfish thrown back into the ocean, there were a few families at the reservation who were very grateful for the work that was done. The church crew remodeled some trailer houses and helped with a VBS for the reservation kids. They were very glad to get back to the comforts of home. Be it ever so humble….
Home School Adventures

Most of the Allisons attended the annual home school camp out/conference at Big Sandy, Texas in May. This year, Hannah Grace attended the student sessions, while Joseph marched with the ALERT Cadets. Timothy chose to teach in the Children’s Institute, where Jubilee was supposed to be stationed. She decided right away that the C.I. was not for her. But Mom decided it was. It took some heavy persuasion, but Jubilee finally surrendered to her fate – and decided it wasn’t so bad after all.

Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone'...

Bethany and Timothy drove each other to Houston last August for Bethany to compete in the American Idol tryouts. She failed to warn Timothy about standing in line all night to get a ticket number. Oh well, at least Timothy would be able to watch the auditions. But wait! He was underage, and was not allowed in the building! Oh well, he got a nice long nap in the hotel room, and at least Bethany would come out with a win. But wait! The judges obviously were not looking for raw talent that day, and Bethany was politely excused. Oh well, they could redeem the trip by a visit to the Alamo. But wait! It was closed! Oh well, it made a good back-drop for pictures. Maybe they could visit some old friends in San Antonio, the Sangalis. But wait! They weren't at home! However, the Sangalis did eventually arrive home, and treated Bethany and Timothy to an evening of .... Bowling!
Spring Fling!

Last March, Kim dragged Hannah Grace to Oklahoma City for the 3 day Mother/Daughter Commit conference (what fun they had!). They then met Herb, Timothy, and Pa at the Cowboy Hall of Fame for the Safari Club dinner and auction. We were invited for the purpose of receiving Timothy’s plaque for his winning essay. The other attendees were actually bidding on rhino hunts in Africa, and polar bear hunts at the pole. We were clearly out of our league. The Allison family sat low in their chairs and refused to lift their forks for fear of winning a zebra hunt in the Congo.

No Stomach for It

Joseph was drawn for a special turkey hunt in Cookson which yielded no turkeys, and Herb was drawn for a special deer hunt in Pushmataha, which yielded no deer. Joseph was also treated to a special deer hunt in Pushmataha, but this time Joseph packed his own food (remember the sugar cookies in the tin can?). However, it didn’t help him much when he got sick in his tree stand. Joseph came down and the food came up. The trip was cut short with no deer in the truck, and they all came dragging home.

Rifle Rivalry

Herb took a truck load of young’uns, including Hannah Grace, to their hunter safety course in 2010. Hannah plans to outshoot the guys and win the family deer slayer contest. From last year’s hunting report, it shouldn’t be that hard. The deer count in 2010 was a disappointing: 1 spike for Joseph and 2 does for Herb.
Folks, there’s a fine line between hunting, and sitting in a deer stand looking ridiculous.
“Break an Egg”

When a position opened to lead the “Kids for Christ” devotionals at Creek Elementary School, Kim volunteered Hannah Grace and Timothy. They have learned that one must talk fast and loud to keep 200 kids’ attention in a very packed room. They also learned not to do the “egg skit.” This skit involves having a volunteer (Timothy) try to hold 10 eggs without breaking them to illustrate the impossibility of keeping the 10 Commandments. The eggs get broken, and the only remedy is to be covered with the blood of Christ (a red robe).

Things went awry when eggs started smashing and kids started screaming (and screaming). Then the little hooligans had the nerve to volunteer to die for Timothy. “No,” Kim calmly explained, “In order to die for someone else’s sins, you have to be sinless, yourself.” They maintained that they were. It was surprising how many of them had never disobeyed, never stolen anything and never told a lie! It was hard to convince them they needed a Savior. However, after the skit, one little girl came up to say she knew she had broken those commandments, and how could she get to Heaven? Timothy was glad to explain to her about the free gift of salvation, and share with her how to receive Christ. Luke 5:32: “I (Christ) came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Photo Man

Timothy attended another Institute in Photographic Studies last summer in picturesque Colorado, thus increasing his marketability as a photographer. He is now in great demand for weddings and senior pictures (not great pay, but great demand).
A Starlet is Born

Jubilee received rave reviews for her role of “Mary” in the church Christmas play. Her acting debut contained no speaking parts, but we were nonetheless impressed with her ability to stand perfectly still and silent through 3 songs. Stage fright probably played a part in that!

Keep Shooting

In August, Timothy and Herb embarked on the long awaited antelope hunt! Based on the accounts of the previous years’ hunters, Timothy would need but to sit for 5 minutes, the guide would whistle for the antelope, and then, lights out! But, due to a deadly winter, the antelope were scarce and didn’t come when called. 5 minutes turned into 5 hours, and so on, until at the end of 2 hard days of hunting and lots of bullets, Timothy finally connected with a buck at 350 yards. After 3 hits and a wild chase through the desert, he brought it down. They all learned a new hunting lesson: “if it’s still kicking - keep shooting!”

Jubilee’s Turn

With all the big kids going here and there, Jubilee gets stuck at home with mom a lot. To even the score, Herb took Kim and Jubilee to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Shawnee. The big kids (who went everywhere in a pack of 5 when they were small) were concerned Jubilee wouldn’t enjoy the outing, being an only child. Jubilee, however, didn’t seem to mind having her parents all to herself to do her bidding at her beck and call. In fact, she seemed a natural for the part.
Footnotes

*Bethany and Caleb received President’s and Vice-President’s Honor Roll recognition at a special reception at Connors. Of course, they were only following in their mother’s and grandfather’s (and don’t forget Uncle Curt’s) footsteps who received the same award at Connors over 25 years ago. (Has it been that long?!)
*…About those chicken pox … Timothy came close to the "bright light," too, but only from the death threats he received from his siblings. They held him personally responsible for bringing home the virus.
*Turkey count for the year was Joseph and Herb – 2 each; Timothy – 1.  However, Timothy does contend that his turkey was the biggest.
*Hannah Grace got her upper braces off in 2010, revealing a dazzling smile, and the lower braces will come off in Jan ’11. In other tooth related news, she had 4 teeth extracted last year. However, none of this dental work has even slowed down her incessant talking.
*Bethany keeps racking up scholarships to further her education as a Criminal Justice major. Her latest scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa –“Leaders of Tomorrow”- warranted a write up in the newspaper.
*Timothy, Joseph, Uncle Curt, and Uncle Scott took a motorcycle trip to Waco, TX to celebrate Scott’s new motorcycle, and Joseph’s new motorcycle license. After several laps around a traffic circle, they managed to stay ahead of the rain and have a fun trip!
*Hannah Grace was given a Shih-Tzu mix named Candy which sleeps 24/7 (nickname: Doggie Doo-Little). She lives under a table in our school room/garage and appears to be quite content. Jubilee helps feed her and smother her with hugs and kisses.
*Our old faithful Suburban gave up the ghost after serving us for many years. We are still waiting for a replacement that will hold the whole family. The kids say this is not necessary, since they would rather not be seen riding with their parents, anyway.
*In December 2010, Timothy invited himself on a ski trip with the Harlin family to New Mexico. He made quite an impression rolling down the mountain in his camouflage hunting apparel. After a little deep snow hiking, which he didn’t really intend to do, he made his way back to the slopes to try the jumps again.
How hot was it?

Jubilee came in from playing last summer and announced: “It’s so hot, I’m sweating like a hypocrite!”
